DIY washing machine cleaners without bleach
Are you looking for a washing machine cleaner that doesn’t contain bleach? We’ve got you covered!
Whether you’re trying to avoid the harsh effects of bleach on your clothes or the environment, or if you just want to find a product that works better without it, we’ve got some great options for you.
Making your washing machine cleaner is a great way to save money and reduce your exposure to harsh chemicals. Here are some DIY solutions that work just as well as the store-bought stuff!
1. Vinegar and baking soda
Cleaning a washing machine with vinegar and baking soda differs when we’re cleaning a front and top washing machine.
When cleaning the top loader washing machine you can go in one of those three directions:
Solution 1:
Mix 4 cups of vinegar and 1 cup of baking soda in the basket and run a long, hot cycle. Pause the cycle for half an hour once it has completed filling.
Solution 2:
Fill the washing machine drum with hot water, add 4 cups of vinegar and let stand for half an hour. Then add 1 cup baking soda before running a long, hot cycle.
Solution 3:
Add 1 cup of baking soda to the washer, turn on a hot cycle and let it dissolve. Once the soda has dissolved (after about 10 minutes), pause the cycle and then add 4 cups of vinegar. Let sit for half an hour before resuming washing.
If you’re cleaning a front loader washer you can choose one of those two solutions:
Solution 1:
Place 2 cups of vinegar in the washing machine drum. Dissolve half a cup of baking soda in enough water to make a loose paste. Gently pour this into the detergent dispenser.
Solution 2:
Add a half cup of baking soda to the drum, run a cycle with no clothes in it and then add two cups of vinegar directly into the detergent dispenser.
2. Hydrogen peroxide and lemon juice
No matter if you’re cleaning the top or front load washer my recommendation is to fill a spray bottle with those two ingredients and spritz your device. Afterward, just wipe it with a microfiber cloth.
The mixture should contain a half cup of hydrogen peroxide, a quarter cup of real lemon juice, and 2 cups of water.
The active ingredients in this solution—hydrogen peroxide and lemon juice—are both effective cleaners that combat mold growth.
3. Vinegar and lemon juice
Here, just like with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and lemon juice, use a spray bottle to spritz the cleaning solution and afterward wipe it with a cloth.
Combine a half cup of white vinegar, a quarter cup of real lemon juice, and 2 cups of water.
